What to do in September
Timings for USDA zones 6–7. In zones 8–10, start spring sowings three to six weeks earlier and keep planting later into fall; in zones 3–5, wait two to three weeks.
Nights cool off, the summer crops wind down and fall crops fill the empty beds.
Sow
- Spinach and lettuce for fall and overwintering, early in the month
- Radishes and arugula, until mid-month
- Crimson clover and hairy vetch on empty beds, early in the month
- Cereal rye on cleared beds, from mid-month on
Plant out
- Perennials, shrubs and trees: fall-planted roots keep growing until the ground freezes
- Lettuce and kale seedlings, early in the month
Harvest
- Tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, until frost
- Winter squash and pumpkins, once the rind resists a fingernail
- Potatoes, and the first sweet potatoes late in the month
- Apples, pears and fall raspberries
- Fall lettuce, radishes and arugula
Jobs for the month
- Cure winter squash in a warm, dry spot for about two weeks before storing it
- Bring houseplants back indoors before nights drop below 50°F
- Divide crowded spring- and summer-blooming perennials
- Buy spring bulbs now, for planting in October
